The recent closure of the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion in Edinburgh has sparked significant concern among patients and healthcare professionals alike.

The Eye Pavilion, a crucial facility for ophthalmology services, has been temporarily shut down for six months to allow for urgent repair work. This closure has required some services to be relocated to other facilities within NHS Lothian. Inevitably, this raises questions about the continuity and quality of eye care during this period.

The decision to close was driven by the need to address critical issues with the building's infrastructure.  This includes removing and replacing two waste pipes and asbestos material from a sealed cavity.   However, the closure has not been without its challenges.

One of the most significant challenges has been the physical relocation of the full range of diagnostic and treatment equipment required to run a modern eye service. This includes state-of-the-art eye imaging devices such as retinal OCT scanners, visual field analysers, precision eye laser machines, and complex surgical equipment for eye surgery.

While NHS Lothian has made efforts to minimize disruption, the closure has inevitably caused inconvenience for patients.  The closure has also raised broader questions about the future of ophthalmology services in Edinburgh.

The Eye Pavilion has long been plagued with issues, having been deemed not fit for purpose in 2014. Despite approval in principle for a new facility in 2018, the Scottish Government withdrew funding from the project in December 2020, proposing instead to spread ophthalmic services across the Lothians. This decision has left many patients and campaigners feeling uncertain about the long-term prospects for eye care in the region.

In conclusion, the temporary closure of the Eye Pavilion in Edinburgh has had a significant impact on hospital eye services in the area. While NHS Lothian has taken steps to ensure the continuity of care, the relocation of services has posed challenges for both patients and healthcare providers. The situation has underscored the need for a long-term solution to address the infrastructure issues at the Eye Pavilion and ensure that patients in Edinburgh have access to high-quality ophthalmology services.
