Pleural plaques represent a form of scarring that occurs on the outer membrane of the lungs. Although these plaques are non-cancerous and generally do not progress to malignancy, they develop gradually as fibrotic scar tissue builds up.

In most cases, pleural plaques are asymptomatic; however, some individuals may experience limitations in breathing and discomfort.

Whilst the presence of pleural plaques does not ensure the onset of more serious asbestos-related diseases such as pleural thickening, it often signifies a history of significant asbestos exposure.

Pleural thickening is a complex condition that involves the thickening of the protective membrane surrounding the lungs, known as the pleura. This thickening can occur as a result of exposure to substances like asbestos fibres which can lead to scarring and thickening of the pleura. Over time, this thickening can cause difficulties in lung expansion, resulting in symptoms such as chest pains, breathlessness, and discomfort, especially during physical activity.

It is important to understand that pleural thickening is a latent disease, meaning that symptoms may not manifest until many years after exposure to asbestos. This delayed onset of symptoms underscores the importance of early detection and diagnosis through medical imaging techniques like chest X-rays or CT scans.

Individuals with pleural thickening are at an increased risk of developing further conditions, highlighting the importance of proactive medical monitoring and intervention.

Pleural thickening can vary in severity and progression, potentially leading to disability and decreased quality of life. Seeking prompt medical advice and diagnosis from a medical professional is crucial for managing this condition and addressing any associated health risks effectively.
